Þjóðernissinnadraumur Magnúsar Þórs / Magnús Þór's Nationalist Dream
[ÍS] Horfði á Silfur Egils í dag og sá ótrúlega umræðu um innflytjendamál. Magnús Þór Hafsteinsson, varaformaður Frjálslynda flokksins, hélt því fram að innflytjendur séu orðnir “vandamál” hér á landi. Þegar hann var spurður um dæmi sagði hann ýmsar sögur af því sem hann hefur heyrt og vitnaði í almennan orðróm.
Já, “sögur” – það er alltaf hægt að vitna í orðróm þegar maður getur ekki stuðst við staðreyndir. Hér er ein staðreynd: atvinnuleysi á Íslandi hefur minkað frá tæpum 2% í september 2005 til 1% í dag, þrátt fyrir þetta “ógnandi” 1 maí síðastaliðinn, þegar Ísland opnaðist fyrir nýjum ESB löndum. Magnús Þór talaði um þetta “flæði” af fólki sem er að streyma inn í landið, og lét í veðri vaka að það væri að stela störfum frá Íslendingum. Hvernig er hægt að segja þetta þegar fleiri störf eru til nú en fyrir einu ári síðan?
Svarið er einfalt – Magnús Þór er að reyna að hræða fólk til þess að ná stuðningi og vinna sér fylgi. Þetta var undirstrikaði með ýmsum rangfærslum sem hann hélt á lofti. Hann talaði um múslima sem “þekkja ekki okkar menningu og þekkja ekki okkar tungumál”. Á hverju átti hann von, að fólk læri allt um íslenska menningu og fari á íslenskunámskeið erlendis áður enn það kemur til landsins? Og hvað kemur trú þessu máli við? Hann talaði líka endalaust um hvað við erum lítið þjóð sem þolir ekki fleiri innflytjendur, og hvernig við erum ekki fjölmenningarlegt land. Á hvaða öld er hann eiginlega að lifa? Hann sagði líka frá því hvernig sumir “þurfa ekki að læra íslensku”. Alþingismaðurinn hefur greinilega ekki kynnt sér lög landsins í þessum efnum, þar sem stendur að innflytjendur eru skuldbundnir til að stunda 150 klukkustundir í íslensku námskeið til þess að fá dvalar- og atvinnuleyfi. Og vel að merkja, það er líka bráðnauðsynlegt að læra íslensku ef maður ætlar sér að gera meira á Íslandi heldur en að þrífa skrifstofur eða vinna í frystihúsi.
Svona fór það –Magnús Þór segir eitt, en veruleikinn er allt annar. Svona tala þjóðernissinnar og rasístar, um allan heim.
Ef maður les grein sem Magnús Þór skrifaði þann 3 nóvember sl. á vefsíðurinn hans, er hægt að sjá nokkur línurit, kort, og gröf sem benda á hvernig innflytjendum hefur fjölgað hér á landi, án þess að benda á að atvinna hefur aukist– ekki minnkað – á sama tíma. Markmið hans virðist það eitt að hræða fólk. Kjarni greinarinnar er að fólk frá austur Evrópu (sem er oft notað til að vekja upp kalda stríðs tilfinningar) eru að vinna fyrir lægri laun en Íslendingar, þannig að íslenskir verkamenn gætu misst vinnuna. Eins og ég átti von á getur Magnús hins vegar ekki sagt hversu margir Íslendingar hafa missti starf sitt út af þessu. En það er ekki meginmálið. Málið er, hverjum er um að kenna og hverjir bera ábyrgð á þessu? Ekki þeir sem borga launin, ó nei: samkvæmt Magnúsi er það innflytjandanum sjálfum að kenna hvað hann fær lítið borgað - hann ber sjálfur ábyrgð á láglaunastefnunni!
En eru það ekki bæði stéttarfélög og atvinnurekendur sem ber ábyrgð á því að sjá til þess að verkamenn fái borgað samkvæmt lögum? Jú, reyndar, en það er miklu auðveldara að skella skuldinni á útlendinga, og benda á fólk sem er aðeins að reyna að búa sér betra líf og betri menntun fyrir börnin sín, og segja að þetta fólk sé vandamálið. Það tekur vinnu og orku að efla eftirlit með atvinnurekendum, og sjá til þess að innflytjendur þekki sín sjálfsögðu réttindi. En nei, í stað þess er sagt að þetta fólk eigi að reka úr landi. Lausn Magnúsar, sem hann sagði frá í Silfri Egils, er að setja upp meira og flóknara innflytjendaeftirlit. Það er ekki bara peningasóun, heldur mundu það ekki leysa vandamálin.
Lausnin er m.a. þessi: ASÍ er búið að taka saman frábæran bækling fyrir innflytjendur, þýddur á rúmlega 20 tungumál, sem útskýra réttindi þeirra. Þessar upplýsingar þurfa að komast í hendur hverrar einustu manneskju sem flytur til landsins. Á sama tíma er þarft að efla eftirlit og gera meira til að sjá til þess að atvinnurekendur borgi öllum starfsmönnum sínum samkvæmt lögum. Refsa verður þeim sem misnota aðstöðu sína og brjóta lög í þessum efnum. Það væri bæði ódýrara, skilvirkara og áhrifameira en þjóðernissinnadraumur Magnúsar Þórs.
Það er ennþá nóg pláss fyrir fleiri hér á landi, sem vinna, borga skatta inn í kerfið, byggja upp landið með okkur og auðga fjölmenningu sem gerir landið okkar betra fyrir alla. Sem betur fer eru flestir Íslendingar sammála því. Það er sorglegur dagur þegar stjórnmálamenn reyna að nota óraunhæfan ótta og hræðsluáróður til að ná stuðningi landsmanna.

Ah, yes, stories – you can always use stories when you have no facts to support you. Here’s a fact: unemployment in Iceland has decreased from about 2% in September 2005 to about 1% today, despite the “dreaded” 1 May 2006, when Iceland opened its labour market to the new EU countries. Yet Hafsteinsson spoke of this “flood” of people streaming into the country, stealing jobs from Icelanders. How is it possible to say this while there are more jobs now than one year ago?
The answer is simple – Hafsteinsson is trying to scare people in order to get support. This was underlined with each lie he told. He talked about Muslims who “don’t know our culture and don’t know our language”. What does he expect, that people learn all about Icelandic culture and take Icelandic language classes abroad before they come here? And what does religion have to do with anything? He also spoke endlessly of how we’re a tiny nation that can’t tolerate more people, and that we are not a multicultural country. What century is he living in? He also talked about how some immigrants “don’t need to learn Icelandic”. He’s obviously not familiar with the law that states that foreigners have to take 150 hours of Icelandic language classes in order to get a permanent work and residence permit. And excuse me, but it’s also completely necessary to learn Icelandic if you want to do more than clean offices or work in a fish factory.
That’s how it went – he says one thing, reality is something different. But this is how nationalists and racists the world over talk.
If you take a look at an article Hafsteinsson wrote on his website on 3 November, you can see some charts, graphs and maps that point to how immigrants have increased in Iceland, without saying that employment has grown – not shrinken – at the same time. His object is clearly just to frighten people. The core of the article is that people from eastern Europe (always used to arouse those Cold War emotions) are working for a lower salary than Icelanders, so that Icelandic workers could lose their lobs. As I expected, he couldn’t say how many Icelanders have lost their jobs in this way, but that’s not the point – the point is, who’s to blame for this? Not the people paying the salaries, no – the immigrants themselves are responsible for how much they get paid!
Isn’t the unions and the employers who are responsible for seeing to it that workers are paid according to law? Yes, actually, but it’s a lot easier to point at people who are only trying to get a better life and a better education for themselves and their children, and say that they’re the problem. It takes work to supervise employers, and to make sure that immigrants know their working rights. No, no – better kick them out of the country. Hafsteinsson’s solution, which he described on Silfur Egils, is to set up larger and more complicated immigrant supervision. This isn’t just a waste of money; it also wouldn’t solve the problem.
The solution is this: The Confederacy of Icelandic Labour Unions (ASÍ) has put together some great literature for immigrants, translated into about 20 languages, which explains their working rights. This information needs to get into the hands of each person who moves to this country. At the same time it is needed to do more to supervise employers to make sure that they’re paying their employees according to the law, and punish those who misuse them. This would be both cheaper and more effective than Hafsteinsson’s nationalist dream.
There is still more than enough space for more people in this country who work, pay taxes into the system that we all enjoy, build up this country with us and increase the multiculturalism that makes our country better. Fortunately most Icelanders are an agreement with this. It’s a sad day when politicians try to use unfounded fear to get the support of the country.

Being a foreign student here in Iceland, I feel completly affected by those declarations even if I'm not a real immigrant.
The problem with this kind of politicians is that they always point at people and never at situations. The fact is that there are certainly some problems due to immigration, like integration, but instead of trying to understand why it is like that, they blaim foreigners in their globality for those problems. This person is very dangerous. He tries to wake up intolerance and distrust of Icelanders towards foreigners.
But it would be good to remind Magnús Þór and the nation in general that if a lot of foreigners immigrate to Iceland because, there are a lot of Icelanders who emigrate abroad.
